Pastoral Assistance

SRS Team 2007 for web

A Senior Resident or Sub Dean lives on each floor (or in one of the small wings) of the Hall. Senior Residents and Sub Deans are later year students who:

  • help new students get to know their way around the Hall and the ANU,
  • help all residents on their floor get to know each other and the rest of the Hall community,
  • provide academic assistance as part of the Academic Mentor programme and
  • help residents orientate to Canberra and the wider society.

Each Senior Resident and Sub Dean also has a portfolio to work with during the year. The portfolios are themes which enable all residents to experience academic, social and personal growth during their time in Hall. Examples of the Portfolios include:

  • Coordinators of the Arts, Rhetoric, , Sustainability and Asia-Pacific Learning Communities - please see our Learning Community page for more information
  • Mental and Physical Heath. Stress and depression are some of the biggest challenges residents face at university; this portfolio aims to care for the physical and mental wellbeing of every member of the Hall.
  • Careers and Finances. For information on part-time work, scholarships, bursaries, dinners with potential employers and alumni.
  • Nutrition. Good food brings people together and keeps you performing at your best while at university. This portfolio promotes food and eating well and includes Iron Chef competitions, communal use of the South Kitchen, shopping trips to supermarkets, and the Food Committee.
  • Research and Postgraduate Students is a portfolio which caters for postgraduate students, including regular social functions, opportunities to talk about research, celebrations of theses submissions and other activities which integrate postgraduate students into the Bruce community.
  • First Year Experience, a portfolio keeping a finger on the pulse of the first year cohort, making sure we are providing the things they need to have a great and successful time at university.
  • Communications keeps everyone in Hall informed about what's going on, including our weekly newsletter Puff and the SR sites on Dragonlair, our intranet.
  • Publications includes mentoring the editors of Cross-sections, our academic journal, and acting as editor of Ignis Draconis, our regular magazine.
  • Sub Dean Portfolios include Academic Support (e.g. training, coordination and support of Academic Mentors) and Community Support (e.g. diversity training, Ally training, supporting initiatives which build community at Bruce).
